You saved me from an abusive marriage

Rose was going through physical, emotional and economic violence implicated by the ex-husband Phillip. For seven years, Phillip would do revolting things in his drunkenness such as; pouring cooked food & sending his family to bed hungry, verbally insulting his children, demolishing the house in the night as his family members were asleep, selling off the family farmed food produce, stopping her from working and demanding for return of his dowry.

Jane had been financially supporting some of her siblings as well as her five children so when Phillip stopped her from working, it deeply affected her and her family. The lives of the children were at stake because she wasn’t working yet Phillip wasn’t also providing for the children.

In search for a remedy, Rose reported her ordeal to the CDO’s office, her church, her parents and LC Chairperson but the matter was never resolved. Fortunately, the CDO of Muhokya Sub County referred her to JCU Kasese office for assistance. The Centre took on her matter and invited Phillip for mediation on several occasions but he never showed up. This is when JCU filed a divorce petition against him in Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court seeking for dissolution of the marriage, Custody of the children and maintenance orders. Finally, in December 2022, judgment was passed and in favor of Rose.

In the end, Rose and her children were rescued from all the violence and she was so relieved. “I feel so relieved and comfortable. Before, I was full of fear that my husband would kill me because he had attempted to do so when he demolished the house in which my children and I were sleeping during that fateful night.”
