SUCCESS STORY: Sisters receive an equal share of their father’s estate

Our client (Grace) and her five siblings sold off their late father’s land for Ugx10 million in 2020. The buyer made an initial payment of Ugx7.4 million. Unfortunately, Grace and her two sisters got a raw deal when Grace’s three brothers refused to equally share that purchase money with them.

Feeling disgruntled with this state of affairs, Grace refused to be bullied by her brothers and decided to report the matter to the JCU Bundibugyo Centre in November 2020. The Centre held a mediation among all six siblings in December 2020, where they were sensitized about property and inheritance rights.

The brothers were also advised to share the money equally since their sisters were also equal beneficiaries to their late father’s estate. In the end, all parties agreed that the outstanding balance of Ugx2.6 million be paid and shared among the three sisters. On 20th January 2021, the Ugx2.6 million was indeed paid and received by Grace.
