SUCCESSION LAW
In February 2021, the JCU Mbale Centre made a follow up visit to our client Cathy, who they had helped to acquire letters of administration to administer her late husband’s estate in 2019. Cathy’s husband had passed away intestate (without leaving a valid will) in 2018, leaving behind property and money which she couldn’t access without the letters of administration.
On 12th December 2019, the Centre successfully aided Cathy acquire the letters of administration from court and she was able to access her late husband’s bank account and started receiving his monthly pension fee of Ugx280.000 as early as January 2020. Additionally, there was land measuring up to seven acres that she had to distribute among her eleven children.
The JCU Legal Officer, Nakale Mary, verified that she had indeed equally distributed the property among all beneficiaries. Cathy was thankful to JCU for helping her gain control of her late husband’s estate. She has shared the land amongst her children and also uses the pension money left by her husband to cover utility bills.
